Viva Bike Vegas 2010!

It seems like all I’ve been posting lately is bike ride this and bike ride that doesn’t it?!  Sorry about that, but alas I have another cycling event post!  At this point last year when Chris was getting ready for Viva 2009, it was about 4 months after we had both started cycling and I had thought to myself, I don’t know if I could ever do a century! It’s funny to look back and realize that was going through my mind at that point in time.  I was so happy for Chris, but I was still pretty new to this whole cycling thing and my foot was just barely touching the water.  Flash forward to now and I’ve just about jumped right in!!!  So far with this century under my belt now, I’ve finished 2 centuries, one of which was the Napa Century, and am going to be on a cycling team!  A lot can happen over the course of a year . . .   (more…)

what an experience – Furnace Creek 508

Hi guys!!  I am sooo loving this cool down we are having!  I actually had to put on a little zip up jacket when we were walking Buster last night.  We even had a pretty torrential downpour Monday and I didn’t quite make it home from my bike ride (pic to follow).  First, I have to share some pictures from the Furnace Creek 508 bike race this past weekend with my friend Jen.  She is the most inspirational, amazingly strong cyclist and athlete I know and I was absolutely honored and excited to be on her crew.  It was one experience I will never forget . . .   (more…)

Hey guys!  The weekend has flown by as usual and I admit most of it has been trying to get those miles in again.  I’m about 3 weeks out from Viva Bike Vegas, and pretty much next Sunday will be my last full day to ride *gulp*  I will be going out of town for some exciting events (details to follow)!  If you want to check out my rides, read on   (more…)

getting in those miles

Anyone else out there think Monday came waaaay too fast?  Especially after that holiday weekend!  Not too much ensued for me this weekend, but I did get to visit with my grandparents in town on Friday evening and spent a good portion of Saturday finishing up wash and house chores.  I am definitely enjoying the slight cool down we are having here because that means that race/ride/endurance event season is approaching!!!  Granted it is still 100 F here today and I’m wondering if fall is ever going to come?   (more…)

happy campers in mt. charleston

Hello!  Chris and I made a bee line for Mt. Charleston last Friday to get in some good ol’ camping and biking.  We kind of got everything together last minute, and it was a pretty short trip, but we had fun!  It was nice to get out of the Vegas heat and not have cell phone service for a little while.  Sometimes it’s just nice to sit out in nature with a book in hand, a cool breeze at your back, and nothing but whispering trees and chippers climbing up your leg wanting more pistachios.   (more…)

recovery makes all the difference + a giveaway!

Recovery Nutrition, or what you ingest after a hard workout, is a integral component to any training plan.  This is the time when there is increased blood flow to your working muscles and post-exercise allows for rapid nutrient replacement.  This is especially important for those training two times per day or teams with two stages or events in one day.  Be assured that if you get the right mix of recovery nutrients that your body deserves, you’ll replace your glycogen stores, repair muscle tissue, and facilitate maximal training adaptation and advancement.  You’ll be revving to go!   (more…)

make a difference with almond breeze

I wanted to dedicate this short post to highlight the Almond Breeze Taste and Make a Difference Program! As a Foodbuzz tastemaker I was chosen to feature a widget (on the right hand side) where you, my readers, have the option to make a difference by telling Almond Breeze how to divide $25K between five charitable organizations!  Yes, that’s $25,000 DOLLARS!

As many of you know I recently completed my first century bike ride to benefit to LIVESTRONG which was an absolutely amazing experience.  Because I have a strong passion for this great organization, I wanted to represent this charity in the challenge.  I know Lance isn’t doing too hot in the Tour de France at the moment, and probably won’t win the Tour this year, but let’s send him off with a great donation for a great cause to help in the fight against cancer.  Who’s with me???

All you have to do to help support LIVESTRONG is just one click on the right!

can’t stand the heat

It has been a scorcher here lately as I will probably repeat and repeat this entire summer!  I’m already looking forward to fall.  The heat just zaps the energy right out of me. I’m fine in the shade, but direct sunlight is no bueno.  It really stinks for any kind of activity outdoors.  We did make it on a bike ride Saturday morning, which was the 4th early wake-up call ride in a row for me!  I could tell my legs were not quite as fresh and the heat just threw in another lovely variable towards my demise.   (more…)

athletic identity in children + simple dinners

I receive the Nutrition and Your Child Newsletter which is a research-based newsletter produced by the USDA/ARS Children’s Nutrition Research Center (CNRC) at Baylor College of Medicine.  I was really intrigued by this recent snippet which linked the creation of a positive athletic self-image in children to being active throughout life.  I attached part of the newsletter below and hope you enjoy it too.  It’s amazing how truly influential we can be in children’s lives and their future health.   (more…)

a bad blogger who started swimming

I’ve been a bad, bad blogger lately, but some things have come up recently that must be a priority for my future 🙂  Most of the past week Chris and I have been coming up with random lunch and dinner selections since I didn’t get a chance to get to the grocery store.  I won’t spare you the details and frankly I forgot to take pictures eek!  I feel like pretty soon, my head with sure spin off and fly away somewhere never to be seen again!  Has anyone seen my brain?   (more…)
