can’t stand the heat

It has been a scorcher here lately as I will probably repeat and repeat this entire summer!  I’m already looking forward to fall.  The heat just zaps the energy right out of me. I’m fine in the shade, but direct sunlight is no bueno.  It really stinks for any kind of activity outdoors.  We did make it on a bike ride Saturday morning, which was the 4th early wake-up call ride in a row for me!  I could tell my legs were not quite as fresh and the heat just threw in another lovely variable towards my demise.

At the beginning of the ride, I felt pretty good.  It was 6am and the sun was out, but it wasn’t extremely hot.  Oh I’d say about 88 F?  It’s really sad when our lows are only 85 F.  Towards the middle of the ride, the sun’s lovely rays began to beat down on me something fierce.  Paired with a nice 8% grade for one good jont that I tried to power up, and I was just about toasted from then on.

Gorgeous views around Lake Mead though.

Here’s me thinking ‘Oh my God, it is so freakin’ hot, kill me now!’

For most of the way back there is a nice grade and Chris thankfully stayed back with me.  We made it for a stop at the gas station where we grabbed more Gatorade, water, and wheat thins.  I also got a nice bag of ice to cool down my head!  ahhhh

Thank You,  have a HOT day. . .

I made it up the last good hill and finished strong, or as strong as I could!

  • 41 miles in 2:36 riding time
  • Avg 15.6 mph

On the ride I had about 60 oz of Gatorade, 16 oz of water, 1/2 small box of wheat thins, and 5 small dates.

Man, Chris and I were just exhausted after that hot ride, and while we wanted to just veg on the couch, we had our cycling club BBQ and swimming lessons to go to!  I quickly grabbed a chocolate milk and made some lemony farro salad to take before we headed out. Green Valley Cyclists organized a nice BBQ for us at a local park. They had hamburgers, hot dogs and various side dishes. It was fun to see the group out of their cycling gear!

I had 1/2 a burger with lettuce, tomato, avocado, a slice of watermelon, about 3/4 cup of the farro salad and a rice krispie treat.  mmm

Next up was swim lessons!  For the third lesson, I’m feeling a lot better about freestyle.  I can make it a length fairly comfortably.  This week we tried to master the flip for continuous swimming. . . ummm I’ll keep working on it.  I manage to get water up my nose and disorient myself so that I can’t get back on track lol oh boy. funny stuff.

This cracks me up.  I don’t think the pool really enforces the ‘fuel efficient vehicles only’ parking spots.  And no that was not a hybrid truck.

After swim I whipped up a yummy smoothie in the Bullet and managed to get some house chores done, but had to lie down for a 20 min power nap.  It felt great!

Dinner was leftover grilled fish tacos!! This is another one of my favorite summer recipes and it really hit the spot.

I love the cool, cilantro and lime dressing.

I had a serving of blue corn chips with this salsa that I recently found at TJ’s and we love it!

For dessert I had a glass of milk with an Iced Oatmeal Dunker from TJ’s and a side of ‘So You Think You Can Dance’.  I just adore that show!

Totals for this day ~ 2800 kcals and 170 oz of fluids, woop!

Sunday I planned to sleep in for once while Chris decided to go for a ride up Mt. Charleston with some of the group.  I slept in until 6:30 am and it was absolutely glorious!!!  I was planning on having a rest day, but Kristen was going to body pump and of course I wanted to join!  Afterwards we hit up Starbucks to catch up with some good conversation and I enjoyed a chocolate milk.  Sorry I’ve been bad about foodie pictures today 🙁

Not much else for me on the agenda, but catching up with e-mails, studying, and getting organized for the week. Tonight I believe we’ll be having chicken sausage and roasted pepper melts 🙂

Hope you had a nice weekend!

What are the summer’s like where you live?  Can you ‘take the heat’?

  1. What gorgeous scenery on your bike ride!! And it’s funny because at TJ’s today I had that avocado salsa verde in my hand, inspected it for like an hour, then put it back. I knew I should have gotten it!
It’s been so hot here too..nearly 100 every day! Your BBQ looks like a lot of fun, and fish tacos are the best in the summer! And so is SYTYCD.. I always love seeing what outrageous dress Cat Deeley will wear!

  2. I am with you 100% on the heat! I love fall (fave season)…short sleeve days and sweaters at night! Great job pushing through the heat!

Fortunately, Michigan is much more temperate than St. Louis, so I’m enjoying a bit cooler weather!

  3. Pretty sure I recognize where you were biking…and can’t believe you spent so much time outside! Yuck, desert heat. I’m ready for fall, er November, already too.

  4. I’m afraid to go back home – it just broke into the triple digits while I was visiting my brother and I’m pretty sure those summer temps are here to stay. I’d much rather take humidity over triple digits. It’s funny though, I find that building air conditioning makes it worse – the contrast between freezing while inside (to the point of having a sweater at work) vs. melting outside.
    Looks like a great ride.

  5. Yay summer finally arrived!…wait….BOOOOOOO. Even the animals are being all lazy and finding the cool places to lay around the house. You saw the pic of Thor on Facebook, him and Koinu just lay next to each other against that wall, with the combination of the AC and fan, it gets a nice breeze going down the side of it. I really think that we are going to give Thor and Lucky the “Lion” cut this summer to help them stay cool. If you haven’t seen it, it looks pretty funny….Thor would look funny as heck, but it is functional. 🙂 (http://addittothelist.files.wordpress.com/2007/12/polo-lion-cut.jpg) there’s a link to a pic of a cat with a lion cut. Stay cool you two!

  6. Allen, haha that picture cracks me up! It would cool them down pretty good 🙂 I think we’re supposed to be 107 today, ugh.

  7. I love heat, but totally unlove direct sunlight–I would be so grouchy in your place, but you have such a big smile. Awesome! Growing up in Montreal, you would always hear, come summertime, “it’s not the heat, it’s the humidity!” When I see your pics, I doubt that… way to be a trouper!

  8. Gorgeous biking pics! The heat can be pretty draining. I prefer the breezy months like March & October!

  11. I can only imagine how hot it is where you are, although believe it or not Columbus, Ohio summers are torturous. Out lows may not be 85 degrees, but they are close, at about 75 degrees. Not only that but we have HUMIDITY, which makes the heat about a million times worse! That’s what I always love about the west coast (or western states) it’s so dry! Here, when it’s 80 degrees it sometimes feels like 100 degrees because of the 90% humidity. It’s crazy and it makes running or walking outside about 50 times more difficult. I try to get up at the crack of dawn to workout, like you, but I’m not good at that yet. 6:30 is the earliest I can wake up!

  12. I am already so sick of this heat! I got back from spin at 6 and it was already super hot! It sucks!
Can’t wait to hang out this weekend!
    Your fish tacos look fab!

  13. Summers are brutal here in Alabama–it’s already it 100 several times this summer, and it’s only June!

  14. Yowza girl I wouldn’t be able to stand the heat either. I need to find farro and make that recipe. Just checked it out and it looks amazing!

Sounds like your swimming lessons are going great. That under water turn thingy always gets me too. Water up the nose is no fun. I haven’t tried to attempt it yet since I started swimming recently but used to do it all the time when I was younger.

  15. Your fish tacos are GORGEOUS! Yum! I’ve had them on my list of things to make for a few weeks now!
    Summer isn’t too bad here…yet!

  16. Good for you for persevering through that heat! You always inspire me! I’ve been thinking about trying the TJ’s avocado salsa verde – now that you’ve given it the thumbs up, I’m definitely trying it next time we go to TJ’s! 🙂

  18. Oh I just do not know how you ride that bike in the Vegas heat. My summer was of course the Vegas summer, but I moved last July. Now it is low 80’s where I live with a nice breeze, bright sun and hopefully little rain.

  19. Right now, it’s 88 F and it feels like 104 F because of the humidity. And I live in Quebec, Canada. Our lows are probably in the 75 F during summer. I don’t do well in the heat actually.
