active weekend

Hello eatingRD readers!  The weather is warming up nicely again and we were able to get in some fun activities for the weekend!  Chris made it through his first sprint triathlon on Saturday at RAGE and I had a nice team bike ride through gorgeous Valley of Fire State Park. Now I’m left wondering where the weekend went and trying to play catch up!

Friday night was dinner out with some of our cycling friends for the usual Fajita Friday at Carlitos which was fabulous as usual.  Love that place and the good company!  Yum!

Saturday we woke up in the weeeee hours of the morning to get everything together for Chris’ triathlon wave start at 7:00am.  Wow, I was like a zombie.  We got most of his gear together the night before, but made it to bed a little later than I hoped.

The morning was absolutely gorgeous!  There is just something special about sunrises 🙂

Chris got all his stuff set up and ready.  Hopefully nothing was forgotten or misplaced!

We got there about 1 hour before the start and pretty soon it was time to hit the water!

aaaaaand they were off!

Chris actually did fairly well for the swim and finished in 21 minutes.  He didn’t have a chance to actually practice in the lake first and said it was probably the most terrifying thing he’s ever done!  For a good first part of the swim he did a lot of breast stroke and back stroke, but by the end got into some free-style.  Good thing about the wet suit was that he wasn’t too cold and it is very buoyant.  You can’t drown in a wet suit, so if you get freaked out, just turn around on your back and float! lol

Now it was time for the bike leg.

He finished the bike leg in about 32 minutes and was looking strong and happy.  It was really neat to watch some of the seasoned triathletes coming in for the finish on one side of their bike and then they just popped out of their spiffy tri shoes from the bike like nuthin’.  That was really cool!

Getting ready for the run leg.

While Chris took off for the run, I had to take off for a full day of work, boooo!  He had a slower run leg of 30 minutes, but his total time ended up being 1 hour and 41 minutes.  I’d say that’s pretty good for a first sprint tri, especially without much training!

It was really a lot of fun to watch and it looked like a great event.  To be honest at first I was wondering why the heck anyone would sign up for this?  The whole concept just seemed foreign to me, but by the end, seeing everyone having a good time and challenging themselves, I actually started to get the tri itch again.  I am definitely going to have to ‘try a tri’ in the future 🙂  Maybe after school and the wedding when there’s a little more time to train.  I just love seeing people being active!!!

Sunday I made it out for a great team ride through Valley of Fire State Park.  I hadn’t been out there for ages and it was gorgeous!  We got in about 47 miles (started my garmin late) and averaged 17.7 mph.  There were some fun descents out and challenging climbs back.  Oh yes and a few scary moments with gravel in the road at the bottom of a fast descent on a turn, and some crazy people trying to pass traffic right in front of us.  That was scary!

Ride eats:

  • Breakfast – 1  cinnamon raisin bagel, 2 tbsp peanut butter, 3 medjool dates, 32 oz water ~ 600 kcals, 20g protein, 105g cho
  • On the ride – 1 shot block, 2 bottles (40 oz) of my Infinit formula ~530 kcals, 3g pro, 110 g cho, 800 mg Na
  • After the ride – 1 rice krispy treat, 1 Muscle Milk, 32 oz of water ~ 330 kcals, 30g protein, 30g cho, 500 mg Na
  • When I got home I had a bowl of greek yogurt w/ cereal & frozen fruit w/ a piece of toast & egg ~ 400 kcals, 25g pro, 55 g cho

Overall a great weekend but it went by too darn fast as usual!  I’m off to whip up some dinner and thinking about peanutty noodles and possibly a bowl of frozen yogurt.  mmm  Total kcals for the day should be around 2,900.

Hope you guys have a wonderful week 🙂

What activity did you get in this weekend?

  1. Sprint triathlons are really fun to train for too because you get to do 3 different things- you never get bored 🙂 It’s definitely a fun challenge. But as you probably noticed all the equipment gets a little crazy!

    Your bike ride looks gorgeous!

  3. Active weekends are the best! Looks like gorgeous weather, too. Looks like Chris did a great job in the tri. I’ve never done one…I think the swim would be terrifying, too!

I ran outside this weekend, but now it’s snowing here, which is crazy!

  4. Agreed about sunrises. You seem like quite the active couple. My husband is doing his first olympic tri (first tri) in June, so much preparation. Great post.

  5. Wow..go Chris!! That is awesome! Tri’s seem like so much fun but I am definitely not the best swimmer.
Looks like a great ride! I am so impressed with how you get those riding shots!

  6. How amazing!! Congrats t Chris AND you for all those miles on the bike! But seriously, a triathalon?! I’m super impressed. Do you think you will do one of those one day??

Peanutty noodles sound so perfect for dinner one night. I made them a year ago and haven’t made them since. Thanks for sharing the Cooking Light version.

  8. I am a horrible swimmer otherwise tri’s would be on my radar! I am so jealous of your weather… I need to get out of the midwest!!

  9. @Allison, I’m not a great swimmer either and I think that’s what’s holding me back! At least I’ll wait till I can dedicate more training time 🙂 The weather has been really nice lately, but you better come visit before it gets in the 110s and never cools down! Not looking forward to that heat.

  10. 43 miles on the bike? I am impressed! I did 30 min on my stationary bike while watching the Real Housewives of Orange County today….that’s like the same thing, right? 😉

  12. Open water swimming is scary on it’s own – and way worse with a bunch of other possibly-drowning and fantic people! Congrats to your husband!
