My Food Philosophy

Here is a little story about me . . .

I first became interested in nutrition when I was about a sophomore in high school.  I don’t know what it was or exactly what triggered the passion, but I became fascinated with food and the importance of nutrition in overall health.  Reading labels and researching products became like second nature and I started to enjoy cooking more.  At this time I was also a member of our high school dance team, took ballet classes at Nevada Ballet Theatre, and also started reformer pilates.  In just one week I’d say I was very active at least 14-17 hours!  As I became more interested in nutrition, it became more of an obsession and I was restricting myself  of things I considered ‘unhealthy’.  Instead of eating for a very active and growing teenager, I was eating like a sedentary 30-year old.  I lost weight.  Too much weight.  Even my own dance coach questioned if I had an eating disorder.  Even though I was eating healthfully and never skipped a meal, I wasn’t eating ENOUGH.  Having enough calories is the first and foremost important aspect to an athletic lifestyle and one’s best performance.  Lightbulb!

As I made my way into college and began to learn more in-depth nutrition information, the reins loosened and my food philosophy became centered around overall health and wellness for my body’s needs.  Towards the end of my college career I became more interested in sports nutrition and working with athletes.  What we eat can truly impact our performance, and nutrition should be a central component of every training program.

I love getting back to the basics, eating wholesome foods and preparing most meals at home.  I love every aspect of food, from the ground that it is produced, the production and care, the weekly shopping trips, prep and assembly, photography, enjoyment with family, and absorption.  It’s fascinating how those little tasty morsels we munch on fuel our bodies and keep us going day to day.  I also enjoy the occasional indulgence.  Oh yes I do.  Dessert is something to be savored and enjoyed in moderation, and I sure enjoy dessert!  Much of nutrition is so psychological as well, which is another fascination of mine.  There is such a powerful connection between the food we eat and the way we think, which can greatly impact our psychological health as well.  While nutrition is an essential component to our health, it’s important to not become so focused on the food, but maintain a balance and peace within ourselves mentally and physically.

I wish you all good health, happy hearts and yummy eats!!!

  1. Hi! I am new to your blog!

Love your story and your approach. You are so right about nutrition and psychology! Most of the time, the problem is not simply not “knowing”, it is so much deeper than that.

    Love your blog!

I’d love to hear what your career path looks like so far as I am a recent graduate and feel like there are just SO many opportunities out there!
Keep up the great blog! 🙂
