Grilled Oroweat ‘Pizza’ Thins

These are the coolest pieces of bread to hit the market and they are very versatile to use for all sorts of quick recipes.  While the ingredients list is a little longer than I’d like, they are only 100 kcals, have 5 g of filling fiber, and taste great.  As a Foodbuzz tastemaker I was sent a few packs to review and share my favorite grilling recipe with them!  Soooo here goes

Because I’m all about the unconventional things to grill . . . because I love pizza . . . because I love anything mini and cute . . . why not grill them as mini pizza thins?  It was delish and super easy too!

You could really use these for all sorts of things like sandwiches and burgers of course, breakfast or patty melts, baked into crispy chips for hummus, etc.  I’ve seen many of you out there get creative with them as well.

Instead of a pasta sauce base for the mini pizzas, I whipped up some vibrant pesto to use up some basil I had in the crisper.  Basil made into pesto = love.

Quick Pesto

  • About 1 container TJ’s basil (a few bunches had gone icky and I had to pick them out)
  • 2-3 cloves garlic (mine were on the smallish side)
  • 1/4 cup roasted pine nuts
  • 1/4-1/3 cup fresh parmesan cheese
  • 1/4 cup olive oil + a good splash of white balsamic vinegar or lemon juice
  • salt and pepper

Buzz this in a food processor to mix well.

Chris helped to slightly grill each sandwich thin on a low flame, just to get a slight golden color and crisp.

I sautéed some tofu cubes (2 blocks from TJ’s) and mushrooms (8oz) in a little olive oil in a pan, and then summer squash (3 yellow) and cherry tomatoes (1/2 small carton).  This is always a great topping for pizza!

Once the thins were done grilling, I placed about 1-2 tbsp of pesto on each sandwich thin (I made 12), topped with about 1/3 cup of veggie mix, a handful of mozzarella and a sprinkling of parmesan.

Ready for grilling!

Chris placed them on the grill for a few minutes for the cheese to melt, and put them on the upper rack if they were getting too charred.

These were so good!  Pair them with a nice side salad and you’ve got yourself a meal!  They would also be great as an appetizer at a party cut into smaller pieces.  Another dessert pizza version we wanted to make, but didn’t get the chance to, was using nutella as a base and then topping with chopped fresh figs mmm

Have you tried Oroweat sandwich thins?  What is your favorite creation to make with them?

  1. I love making ricotta pizzas with them, with chicken, red peppers and olives.

  2. Great idea! I bet these would be so much sturdier than my usual halved pita bread or tortillas for a quick pizza.

  3. Thins aren’t available in my one-horse town, so I haven’t had them–but I’m surprised that you’re into Nutella. Doesn’t that involve partially hydrogenated oils? Maybe I’m dreaming, I just thought I heard someone talking about it around the water cooler a few months back…

  4. @S , Actually they use sustainable palm oil that is not hydrogenated. The modified palm oil is a mix of the liquid and solid oil naturally extracted from the fruit of the palm. The process also reduces the level of saturated fat per serving and has 0 grams of trans fat.
    Here is the ingredients list:

SUGAR, PALM OIL, HAZELNUTS, COCOA, SKIM MILK, REDUCED MINERALS WHEY (MILK), LECITHIN AS EMULSIFIER (SOY), VANILLIN: AN ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR.

Now I would question sugar as the first ingredient and the 21 g of sugar per serving, but of course I believe that Nutella can be enjoyed in moderation 🙂

  5. @Kristen 🙂,
Good to know! I only eat it when I’m in Europe since it seems like such a staple, so I’ve never seen the ingredients… I was just going on rumours and hearsay. Glad they’re wrong!

  6. Your pizzas are so cute! You are much more creative than I am…I just used them as sandwiches and hoped for the best. No grilling recipe for me. 🙂 I like that the pizzas are easy to make and fast, too!

  7. I love those sandwich thins. I usually use them for sandwiches. I haven’t thought of using them for pizza though! Thanks for sharing this idea! I am going to definitely have to try this.

  8. I personally haven’t tried them, but the ladies I eat lunch with when I am on the satellite campus, always make their sandwiches on them. Haven’t thought about using them for grilling pizzas though, I’ll have to try that one. 🙂 Thanks for the idea.

  9. Yum! Had the sandwich thins at HLS this year in Chicago – I made a delicious fold over veggie sandwich with one side and toasted the other with PB. Loved them.

  11. I love sandwich thins! And this is the 2nd grilled pizza I’ve seen on a blog this morning — it’s a sign! I saw one of your potential wedding venues on Kristen’s blog — OMG, GORGEOUS!! You make me want to plan my wedding all over again! I can’t wait to read as as you guys make decisions…and hopefully share pictures, too! 🙂 Congrats again!

  12. What a cute idea! I do wish the ingredient list was a bit shorter but these thins have come in handy for breakfast sandwiches and snacks on the run. Pesto is my ultimate favorite pizza sauce.
