Photography

I absolutely adore the world of food photography and food styling!  It makes me so happy to make a scrumptious meal and then capture that yummy essence in a photo to be remembered and shared.  I’m still learning everything there is to know about photography and my D-SLR camera, so I am not a professional by any means, but it’s just so darn fun!  Usually I get so carried away taking a bunch of pictures of our meal, that I forget to eat.  Chris and I usually eat a lot of cold dinners 😉

I use the Canon Rebel Xsi with the kit lens that came with it.

I don’t have a fancy tripod or lighting station, but am saving up for the future.  I also have my eye on a 100mm f2.8 macro lens that I would love to experiment with.  Normally, because most of my pictures have to be taken once the sun is down (terrible lighting!), I utilize the white balance setting on my camera and set it to ‘tungsten’.  This helps to keep it from being too yellow-ish.  I also have a small table-top tripod that helps eliminate fuzziness when the f-stop must be increased.

Let me know if you have any photography questions and I will try to answer them for you!

  1. Hi Kristen.
I absolutely love your blog. The layout especially caught my eye. Do you use Thesis Theme, by chance? I’m looking into switching over to Thesis, but have never seen the huge photo-changing header. Did you design everything yourself? Can’t wait to read more!

  2. I read that you don’t want your food to be fully cooked when you take the pictures. Some meals can get soggy or mushy and won’t look nice on camera. So maybe you can try to take pictures 10 minutes before it’s done (I know some things like meat loaf won’t work like that) so by the time your done with the pics, the food is cooked and you can eat it hot.

My hubby is supportive but sometimes gets annoyed when I grab the camera before the fork 😉

I too love taking pictures. And the best thing is that I’m showing real food that we can eat AND looks good. Most professional food photographers take pictures of fake food.
